Aims and principles

The Citizens Advice service provides free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities. It values diversity, promotes equality and challenges discrimination.

The service aims to:

  • provide the advice people need for the problems they face;
  • improve the policies and practices that affect people's lives; and
  • challenge discrimination and harassment whenever they occur.

We are independent. Our services are free, impartial, confidential and available to all.

The service we provide is independent as we are a standalone charity. This enables us to offer impartial advice to our clients.

As we are separate from government, we are able to assist our clients with issues they may have with government departments or relevant authorities.

The service we provide is impartial. It is open to everybody irrespective of ability, age, gender, gender identity, race, religion or cutural belief, sexual orientation, social or economic status.

Advice and help, within our remit, will be given to any client.

The service we provide is free.

No person will be turned away from receiving advice due to inability to pay.

As we are a charity reliant on donations, we do accept donations voluntarily given to us.

Nothing learned by us from clients, including the fact of their visits, will be passed on to anyone outside the service without their express permission, subject to any regulatory obligations we have.
